Video Game News: Wicked Whispers Are Going Wild In Hearthstone

Written by

After many a rumour and hushed conversation, we finally know what the next Hearthstone expansion is going to be. You’ve heard the incredible tales of the merciless Old Gods, but you probably didn’t think to heed their warning. Now four legendary Old Gods are coming to Hearthstone and they’re definitely not looking to brighten up your day.

Legend has it, the Old Gods’ voices are dread whispers that no mere mortal can hope to resist. It is said that for millennia uncounted the massive Old Gods lay dreaming in ageless sleep deep beneath the surface of Azeroth. Maybe noisy taverns full of laughter, shouts of triumph, and clanking tankards are like a snooze alarm you can’t turn off, and this whole Old-Gods-waking-up thing is entirely our fault!

Whatever the cause, those nameless tentacled terrors are finally rousing from their naps, and with their waking insidious corruption is seeping up from the stygian depths! Still, there’s no need to fear (mostly!). Civilization is safe (for now!). They haven’t come for the utter domination of all life on Azeroth (probably!).
Now that they’re awake (and they’ve had a chance to stretch their various appendages, rub the sleep out of their many, many eyes, and have a healthy breakfast), the Old Gods have decided to put their malignant might into mortal hands. . . in the form of disgustingly potent Hearthstone cards!

Whispers of the Old Gods will be the next Hearthstone expansion and will bring with it 134 “noisome” new cards. These cards will be made up of C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, and N’Zoth, four of the legendary Old Gods, their followers and some fresh takes on some familiar cards. While no new mechanics have been revealed as of yet for this set, the cards look to be more focused on the Old Gods and changing how they will affect the game. This set also brings a darker theme which can be seen in the corrupted versions of cards we have already seen.

This expansion is still a little while away with the release being pegged for late April/early May which means, if you haven’t been saving up gold for the new expansion, now would be a good time to start. Starting today however you will be able to pre-purchase a 50-pack bundle of Whispers of the Old Gods card packs for $49.99 which will also include a pretty creepy card back. Even if you don’t pre-purchase the new expansion, you’ll still be able to get a taste of the new set as everyone will be getting C’Thun as well as three card packs for free.

While I’m excited for the new set and what it’s going to bring to Hearthstone, I’m still a little apprehensive about it. On the one hand, we’ll be getting new cards to play around with that will change up the meta and and the new gameplay formats will be implemented, but on the other the way the Old Gods look at the moment makes me wonder if the game will end up feeling dominated by them in a similar way that Magic: The Gathering is currently dominated by Eldrazi decks. At the moment they feel very similar in concept, essentially play out the game until you can play your ‘bomb’ and win from there, but hopefully Blizzard have done their homework and will create something that diversify the Hearthstone meta.

You can check out the currently revealed cards for Whispers of the Old Gods on the Hearthstone Facebook page and check out on the 21st of March to do your bit to help reveal more cards. Hopefully we’ll also get a more reliable release date around that time but until then, it’s time to start theory-crafting some interesting new deck ideas.

The best person to offer the worst opinion. Paul's interests include adding 100 hour JRPGs to his backlog and dark walks through dungeons. You'll probably find him rambling on about old man Nintendo or that crazy newfangled eSports thingy.
