The whole story around the “PS4.5” has been debated to the moon and back. Some people are on board with upgrading their existing system while others feel betrayed that they are even considering this. The story has been nothing but a rumour as of yet and the only info we get is from leaks and reports from anonymous sources. The latest one is a bit more hefty. Giant Bomb acquired some information about the rumoured upgrade and they claim it is codenamed NEO, which is cute considering the VR was codenamed Morpheus.
The report claimed that this is in fact an upgrade for the existing PS4 that allows you to play games at higher framerates, with better visual fidelity and so on. Here’s the specs:
|CPU||8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz||8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz|
|GPU||AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz||Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz|
|Memory||8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s||8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s|
However, it was made clear that there won’t be anything exclusive to the NEO. Games will have to be able to run on the base PS4’s specs, but there will also be a mode for the NEO that allows the game to run at a higher performance. Games won’t be exclusive to the NEO and there won’t be any additional features to games that would require the NEO to run.
This is a fairly interesting avenue for Sony to take, if this turns out to be true. I won’t really mind if it happens since there won’t be anything exclusive to the NEO and I can run games on my current PS4 just fine. But this is something unprecedented in the console world. We’ve never been able to “upgrade” our consoles, only have slightly smaller versions of them. We’ll see how this works out.
