So this is my chance to introduce myself as a new member of the Geek Node team. I’m very happy to be here, joining the film crew, so expect to see me weighing in on the latest blockbusters and other movie-related matters.
I’ve been immersed in geek culture pretty much my entire life, hopping from fandom to fandom. This may give my age away but some of my obsessions over the years have included Gummi Bears, Indiana Jones, Return to Oz, ThunderCats, Garfield, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman, Michelle Pfeiffer (hence, pfangirl with the silent “p”) and Tomb Raider. Yeah, I’m a total Child of the 80s, who never got over their love of cartoons and dark fantasy.
Today I cosplay (I was the official Lara Croft at this year’s rAge JHB), I read comics, I write fan fiction, I enjoy a good board game or tabletop RPG session, and I’ve played video games since the days of the Atari 2600. Movies are my first love, though, ever since my mother (perhaps not very wisely!) took me to the cinema to see Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when I was three. It may not be the best of the Indy movies, but it helped to shape my viewing tastes to this very day.
Sitting in the dark of the cinema with a tub of butter salt popcorn is my favourite form of escapism. It’s also pretty much the only way I can consume movies. At home, I tend to get too comfortable on the couch, and fall asleep halfway through.
In other information about me, I’m Durban born and bred, my real name is Noelle Adams, and in terms of social media I’m most active on Twitter (as @pfangirl, surprise!). I’ve been blogging about Pop Culture for 12 years now. Professionally, I was an Ad Industry and Digital Agency copywriter for a decade before heading off to Japan to teach English for two years. Now I’m back and looking for my next adventure while trying to figure out how to make a living off commentary pieces, fiction and games writing – all things I love.
And that’s me, pretty much.
Thanks for reading this, and I hope you enjoy reading my future movie-related thoughts on Geek Node.
