Movie Features: Top 5 Geeky Movies Of 2016

We’re nearing the end of 2016 and as things inevitably wind down both here at Geek Node and across the country, we’re left with some fond memories from the cinema this past year. Join me for a look back at what I consider the top 5 best geek movies of the past 12 months.

5. Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice

At number 5 we have the critically received Batman V Superman.

Some of us loved it, others hated it. Okay…more people hated it…okay everyone hated it.

The cinematic version of this film was an absolute mess. The reason for this? A lot had to be cut from the film to shorten the runtime. The result? Well…you saw the result.

Luckily though the ‘Director’s Cut Blu-Ray Edition’ put back all the stuff that made the cinematic version such a confusing CGI romp through the meadows and did well enough to restore my faith in humanity.

Undoubtedly you’ll argue to no end with me about this but considering the hype that surrounded it and the Blu-Ray Edition that fixed everything – I believe Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is a right entry for the number 5 spot in my top 5 for 2016.

4. Suicide Squad

Moving right along to number 4 – Suicide Squad.

Critics did not receive this film well at all. Even I found it’s issues without much effort but the sheer hype around it pushed it to such astronomical levels of expectation that it couldn’t go any other way than it did. Nevertheless, Suicide Squad was thoroughly enjoyed by fans the world over and is perhaps one of the most talked about films of 2016 as a whole.

Overall the film was entertaining, fun to watch and despite being a large part as a lead of the main media campaigns for Suicide Squad, Jared Leto’s Joker only played a small part (thankfully).

3. Deadpool

Firing away at number 3 – we have the ever popular Deadpool!

Who would have thought Ryan Reynolds destiny would manifest in the form of his role in Deadpool? This film was so fun, over the top offensive, hilarious and filled with action that you couldn’t help but love it.

With talks for Deadpool 2 heavily underway and rumours going around from Deadpool joining the X-Men to Deadpool in space, we’re likely to hear quite a bit more from Ryan Reynolds going far into the future.

2. Star Trek Beyond

Beaming in at the number 2 spot – It’s Star Trek Beyond!

Even though I personally hate this alternate universe crap going on in Star Trek right now and hate the new crew even more than the concept as a whole – I cannot deny the success of the ‘Alternate’ films.

Star Trek Beyond was enormously well received despite this instalment being relatively low tech and less flashy than the previous films. Many believe this film signifies a ‘return to it’s roots’ scenario for the franchise and the film is acclaimed for it’s lovely effects and somewhat simplified story.

I still think it sucks.

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Pew, pew pew! Number one (big surprise) is Rogue One.

As of writing this, Rogue One has not yet been released but as with any Star Wars film it’s set to go down as one of the only films worth remembering for 2016, I mean…come on – it’s a Star Wars movie. Do you remember any of the other crap that was released the same year as the original Star Wars? No? – Nou, ja.

The film is already the basis of several dozen fan theories based solely on trailer footage and with the release creeping ever closer everyone’s getting more and more excited to see Darth Vader – the way he’s meant to be. By that I mean – not old and dying…and not Hayden Christensen.

In closing…

So there you have it. Those are my top 5 for 2016.

Do you agree with my choices? As always I encourage you most earnestly, please do not hesitate for a moment to get in the sea if you disagree.

Here’s Desolation Morris wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Werner is a strange one...he quotes a lot of things...incoherently I might add, also he reviews stuff from time to time. We still don't truly understand what he is or where he came from. To quote him verbatim: Make sure they see my twitter handle so I can get hookers and drugs.
